A Detailed report on the flood situation

Posted by Jaya on August 29, 2008

Here

Due to the breach in the embankment in Kusaha, four districts of north Bihar – Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Purneia – are being currently ravaged. According to recent reports, adjoining districts of Saharsa, Khagaria and Katihar are also under threat because of their position in the hydrographic basin. In Saharsa district, five blocks – Saur Bazaar, Patar Ghat, Sonbarsa, Simri Bhaktiyarpur and Banma Ithari – along with Beldaur block of Khagaria district are in the most precarious situation.

In Araria district Narpatganj, Fobesganj, Raniganj, Bhargama and Palasi blocks have been affected. Similarly in Madhepura district, Muraliganj, Kumarkhand, Udakishunganj, Sinheshwar Esthan, Gwal Pada, Shankerpur, Bihariganj, Alamnagar Chousa, and Madhepura are reeling under floods. And in Purneia district Banmankhi, Dhamdaha, Barharakothi, Rupauli, and Bhawanipur blocks are affected by Kosi rage, which is disrupting lives of approximately 0.4-0.45 million humans.

According to a rough estimate approximately 2.5 – 3 million people are currently affected by the present flood.

Need boats for rescue activities – next 24-48 hours

Posted by Jaya on August 29, 2008

We spoke to AID Volunteers on the ground and apart from the (dry) food/clothes/medicines they urgently need more boats to rescue people. With nearly 20 lacs people stranded, there just aren’t enough boats to rescue them all. An unusual requirement, but if you have any contacts through which you can help more boats reach there, please get in touch.

Contribute through AID India

Posted by Jaya on August 29, 2008

Appeal to support All India Relief Fund of Association for India’s Development.

Dear friends,

India is reeling under floods this monsoons. Nearly a hundred people are dead and several millions affected in Bihar.  AID has received an urgent proposal to help with the flood relief by way of providing boats.  The effort is being coordinated  by Kamayani and Ashish — AID volunteers from Milwaukee who have returned to Bihar.

In Araria, Bihar; Kamayani and team will focus on the following areas:

  1. Rescue operations
  2. Providing Food, medicine and shelter.
  3. Fodder for animals
  4. Removal of Caracas
  5. Provide safe drinking water.
  6. Monitoring of the expenditure by the state.

The team there will try to work along with the government and will also mobilize local resource. The immediate need is to rescue people which will go on for atleast another week.

Kamayani is an Associate Jeevansaathi of AID and her work has included government accountability through Right to Information, facilitation of the promise of hundred days of work to rural families by its employment guarantee act and children’s nutrition programs.

Earlier this year AID has also supported flood relief efforts in Orissa and West Bengal.

We are also hearing the fruits of a success story from our efforts in Andhra Pradesh.  After repeated floods affecting over 1000 acres of farm land in 20 villages in the past 3 years, the government has repaired the Sayanagadda canal (with a budget of over Rs 3 crore) in Srikakulam district after the issue was taken up last year by people living in the villages and AID-India Srikakulam group. Last week we heard from the Srikakulam group that despite floods in other parts of Srikakulam this month, the Sayanagadda canal has kept its banks and has not flooded the fields of the 20 villages.

We appeal to everyone to make a tax deductible contribution to AID’s All India Relief Fund to help respond with relief efforts following natural and man made disasters in India.

Sincerely,
AID Volunteers.

Need to act now

Posted by Jaya on August 28, 2008

The situation of floods in Bihar is already unprecedented. What more, it is going to get worse. We don’t have time to blame the government machineries right now. The first priority is to save as many human lives as possible.

If you are leading any relief activities, or if you have any news about people stranded, please leave a comment or send an e-mail to biharflood@yahoo.com . Let’s try to coordinate our efforts to be as effective as possible.
